U.S. stocks rose Tuesday, pushing the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite briefly above its 10-year closing-high as earnings season got off to a decent start. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 69 points, or 0.5%, to 15294 in midday trade, with Caterpillar and Cisco Systems leading gains.
The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index rose 11 points, or 0.7%, to 1651, with industrials leading nine of 10 industry sectors higher. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 15 points, or 0.4%, to 3500, and was as high as 3,506.64 earlier in the session, above its May 21 record close of 3,502.12, which was the highest since 2000, when the index traded above 5000.
